When the 206 first came out in 1999, Peugeot was facing fierce competition from superminis such as the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo. The unique approach of Peugeot's 206 was that it would not directly replace the 205, instead it was designed to be a bridge between the smaller Peugeot 106 and the larger range of 306. This was to ensure that the lower models of the 306 and 106 could take sales away from the more expensive high-end 205s.
The 206 line includes an open-air hatchback, a two-door coupe cabriolet, and the station wagon, which is known as the 206 CC and 206 SW respectively. There was also an WRC homologated version of the 206 known as the 207 GTi which could go from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and reached the top speed of 210 km/h.
